Begin with an early pickup from your hotel or meeting point between 4:30 – 5:00 am. You’ll depart for a 2-hour drive towards the town of Cusipata for breakfast, following a visit to the beautiful Pomacanchis Lagoon en route, a place for the practice of sports such as kayak and canoeing.
An out-off-the-road track will lead you to the Qenterococha lagoon, the spot to start the adventure to Waqrapukara. Begin hiking along a flat road with some undulations as you admire the Andean landscapes until reaching the first viewpoint. From here, you’ll descent for a period of 30 minutes stopping at the rims of the rocks to gaze at the spectacular Apurimac Canyon, its rock formations, and the depth of its valley. Take some amazing pictures to show up later.
Raising at more than 4100m/2540 ft, Waqrapukara will find you astounded! Have a walkthrough of its archaeological and ceremonial sites for a period of 1 hour, you will also uncover the many enigmas and learn about its purpose with your Guide along with the famous Horned shaped rock formation. We’ll return by another road, journeying across some of the most important historical towns that served as revolutionary spots during the Independence Wars with its hero Tupac Amaru II. Afterward, our transport will be waiting for us to return back to Cusco. (Arriving at 18:00 pm approx.).
Looong day indeed, but worth every minute. Fascinating trip by train (make sure to taste the coffee on board!), well organized. The personal guide knew all about the place and led us to the best spots to take pictures. All in all highly recommended.
